When Gorgons Ruled the Earth

The Earth was a very different place 250 million years ago. The dinosaurs had not yet appeared, and instead ruled a very different group of animals; the Gorgonopsids.

Thanks to Wretched for suggesting I make this video back in the Q&A!

its amazing how many extinction events had to occur just for us to be here today. Seems like random chance to be sometimes. If it wasnt for the Gorgons and other animals dying out during that time period, the dinosaurs may not have existed either.

Also amazing how the Gorgons (with fur) resemble saber tooth cats, tigers, lions, hyenas and even dogs. I guess in a way species eventually evolve in similar ways.

Gorgonopsids have always looked so breathtaking to me. Something about their rather rectangular faces and large jaws is really aesthetically pleasing to me! I would have loved to see them in real life, from a distance of course.

It's so insane when you take a look at what happened at the end of the Permian. This is, as far as I can tell, the only topic on which you get to read the word "apocalyptic" in the scientific literature. So for example, during the end-Permian, there is something called the "Equatorial Vertebrate Eclipse", during which virtually all vertebrates (marine & terrestrial) disappear from the tropics and subtropics. There is even an interval at the Permian-Triassic boundary where all evidence of forests disappears and the world seems to mostly be ruled by ferns and fungi again.

Primeval (2007) introduced me to this creature. I miss that show especially the Gorgonospid vs the Future Predator.

Regardless of how much hair they had, Gorgonopsids likely did not possess scales. When know from other proto-mammals that Gorgons probably had scale-less, gland filled skin similar to later mammals.

When You are so OP that it takes the single most devastating mass-extinction event to finally kill You and yet... Your family survives and returns to dominance after many millions of years

It remind me of Small Soldier movie, in which the main character are called Gorgonite also look like a Gorgons.

Their accurate names still has the word mammal in it, so it still technically means that mammals ruled the Earth before and after the age of dinosaurs.

The Permian has always fascinated me. The creatures were so different but so well adapted to their environment. Thank you for posting. Just subscribed, btw...👍

Thank you for saying "sabertoothed cat" instead of "sabertoothed tiger". :)

Thanks for presenting a much underrated period. There is so much concentration on dinosaurs to the exclusion of almost everything else. I had not heard about possible hair before.
