Hi there. My name is Dr. Shaheen Lakhan. I'm a board certified neurologist and pain management specialist. Today, I'll be introducing Lin's Primary Pain Educational Series for Providers.
We're all here today because we are in the midst of a chronic pain epidemic. In fact, one out of every five Americans suffers from chronic pain. It is the leading cause of disability in America. And its costs exceed heart disease and oncology combined. It is our duty as physicians to provide accurate diagnoses and management plans, including for individuals with chronic pain syndrome. In fact, there is cutting edge neuroscience has elucidated all of the generators for primary pain, and it has finally made the international arena by being incorporated into the ICD-11, chronic primary pain as a diagnostic code.
In this series, we are going to discuss the diagnostic criteria for primary pain, the clinical hallmarks, and biomarkers for chronic primary pain, how to effectively communicate with your patients who suffer from primary pain, and then lastly, evidence-based interventions, largely cognitive and behavioral, that have been proven to be efficacious for patients suffering from primary pain. Through the pursuit of lifelong learning, and that includes learning about primary pain, we will not only be empowering us to learn about new treatments and modalities, but also restore power to patients who are suffering needlessly.
