The deer look for a wendigo is a relatively new depiction from Hollywood. The original Algonquin depictions were tall, thin, pale, humans with no lips and distended guts.

Funnily enough, the wendigos in actual tradition do NOT! Have antlers or a deer like appearance. They are often drawn as pale, pasty, hairless humans with extended features. Which still does play into his character extending and contorting. But it’s just funny how misunderstood windigos are lol they are supposed to resemble corpses.

I think Viv has actually said that Alastor is not based on Wendigos. He was killed because he was mistaken for a deer, hence his deer like attributes. Deer are also known to be one of the few creatures to be cannibals to their own kind, so his cannibalistic nature may stem from his Hell form (tho that is a reach and I assume he was also a cannibal when alive).

Another thing pointing towards it is that in some scenarios, like after Sir Pentious rips his coat, you can hear a wendigo scream/screech from Alastor

I did research and found out wendigo’s fear is being a cannibal
And alastor is a cannibal so yes he might have some traits of the wendigo but I say he’s just MOSTLY based off a regular deer

Another thing is that every time alastor transforms to his radio demon form you can hear wendigo screams or screechs

Alastor, being from New Orleans is actually something very similar, but not a Wendigo. The Algonquin people never lived in the area, however the Choctaw did! And the Choctaw have a creature that matches Alastor much closer than the Wendigo. Look up the Kashehotapalo and have a think! Certainly piqued my interest.

Realistically, I think he's more elk, based on the scream you can hear whenever he shows more of his ability
