This performance from the 2004 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductions show went viral shortly after Prince’s death and has now been viewed over 100 million times.

However, the original director and producer of the show, Joel Gallen, was unhappy with a few elements of how it was shot, so in April 2021 he went back to the original recordings and put together a new “director’s cut”.

This video compares the two versions side by side.


Personally, I like most of the changes Gallen made, such as the faster cutting and closer shots of the performers. However, I do miss some of the dissolves (dissolves seem to be very much out of fashion with directors right now, but I think they can work great with music if used sparingly).


The new edit allows us to see details we couldn’t see in the original - but unfortunately still doesn’t show where that damn guitar disappears to at the end! Anyway, see what you think.....
