I've been using this technique for a while now, and it's very powerful ! You can fine tune it by adding an EQ to the white noise so you can adjust the range of added frequency depending on your needs. You can also get quite creative with this technique, by using any texture in addition or in replacement of the white noise. If you're using a more tonal source (instead of white noise), you can add tone to your percussions, a bit like using a vocoder. And vice versa, you can use the same technique with a vocoder by choosing white noise as carrier !
