Well, even my kid can live for 1 year in the back of my car, flash drives really suck

I forgot a USB in my pants when I washed them, survived both the washing machine & an hour in the dryer. Was very surprised.

Okay.. so couple years back I found one of my old flash drives, 256 meg capacity, in a box. This drive had been sitting in deadly hot temperatures in the garage for years. Over a decade before, it had also mistakenly made it's way through the washing machine on a hot water cycle and through the dryer, also at full heat. All those years later it still worked. Read and write, no errors, and it still faithfully contained all my data. I was so glad to have found it because I had no copies of that data, programs I had written many years before. They all still worked. True story!

Ah damn, I let my drives sunbathe every summer to get a nice tan. 🥵 Gotta stop that, I guess

hmm, I have one in my car, loaded with MP3 files. It's been in there for years, and surprisingly it's not had a single issue. It's one of those really low profile staples brand 16g things. Super cheap, but, works like a champ.

My flashdrive has sat in a hot car since 2015 (in sunny South Africa too). It works fine still. I use it for my music.

Ive had an idea before to make cold-storage backups of really important documents on flash drives (encrypted of course) and bury them a few feet underground in the yard in a waterproof container, where absolutely nothing can get to them, especially fire. The temperature stays nice and cool down there, even in the summer, so that's perfect! Just once a year at least, dig it up and power it on, and add/remove files as needed, or even completely replace the drive and container.

I kind of want to test this. Make one control and one for subject to test. Both of them will live in a car for a year through both heat and cold on my dashboard. One will get plugged into a computer once a month to test their files, the other won't be touched for literally a year. Kind of curious to see how it goes

Even at an optimal tempature. How long would a flash drive hold data for without using it?

I managed to destroy two 32GB Intenso mini USB sticks by leaving them in my car for 3 years. They worked until they suddenly both stopped after a particularly hot weekend during which I had my car parked in direct sunlight and never used it. After that, both sticks weren't recognized by the car anymore, I took them to my desktop and they don't show up either. I think the controllers died from the heat.

These things are pretty reliable.I have a USB drive that has 100 megabytes capacitiy from the 90s.Still works perfectly although its USB 1.0.

Haven't lost data on any type of flash storage yet and I've been using them since roughly 2004/5. Smallest USB stick I have is 512MB from that time and the data was still fine after about 5yrs sitting in a draw. Drive still works flawlessly to this day, not bad for around a 17yr old stick. Found a 128MB Mini SD card a few weeks ago that still had data on it after 10 yrs 🙂. Not sure how long modern capacity drives will last but the older ones were pretty damn reliable.

So you're saying I can save money on PartedMagic by just chucking my SSDs and flash drives into the oven for a bit. Nice.
