The shock absorbing/spring effect of a proper runners stride is insane. Then consider things like weight distribution of a fore foot and ground feel, the obstacles to overcome are significant.

Everyone seems to forget all the muscles that are missing for amputees and how important they are to developing speed. The energy return of the best running blades don’t come anywhere close to this. Plus these are skin interface systems. The lack of direct skeletal connection is a HUGE disadvantage.

I saw a video of a double amputee runner and all the comments were claiming he had an unfair advantage, and I was like, "Are ya dense, son?"

I remember people saying this back when Oscar Pistorius was wanting to run at the Olympics as well as the Paralympics, like he was suddenly gonna run like the Bionic Man or something. And then he placed 16 out of 52, when he'd been getting medals in the Paralympics, so that shut them up somewhat. I think a lot of people fail to understand the amount of work calves, ankles & feet do when running, and while a carbon fibre running blade has a good amount of spring to it, it can't give you the same bounce and control as an ankle, foot and a whole bunch of muscles and ligaments. And that's OK!

Prosthetics are not machine upgrades to turn you into a cyborg, but rather the closest we can currently get to what a real limb does. I don’t think you can really replace what our body does with a machine

There's a hypothesis that humans evolved as endurance runners, and there's good evidence to support it. And building a machine that can even just walk like we do is _extremely_ difficult, even just replicating the mechanics, let alone all the autonomic stuff that goes into it.

I definitly thought prosthetics were further than they were. Media plays a huge role in it. If it weren't for channels like yours I probably would still believe that. I do think however there are far too many people worried about the wrong things.

I read a good explanation to this from a bi-lateral bk who was shut down in a sport due to that very question. His response was this; Yes, yes they are an advantage, because although I can't run or move faster, I train harder and longer to try and make myself stronger. I get up earlier, train harder, stay longer, focus more intently and just flat out want it more than most people that have two legs do. So, in answer to that decision that I have an unfair advantage, I will answer yes. Because I WANT it more than the other competitors. It was powerful to read his response and has helped me to respond to similar questions and concerns. We just try harder than most two leggers. Keep rockin it!!

It’s wild the amount of people who say that because an amputee weighs less, they have an advantage. It’s so much more complicated than that!
