DistroTube Is Wrong About Word Processors!

Recently Distrotube made a video about why word processors are evil, this video was full of really odd arguments as well as some things that were just flat out wrong so I felt like I needed to correct a lot of the points he made.

That 'linuxy-bubble' concept is just too true. The amount of people saying my friends are fake just because I can't migrate all 150 of them to an IRC client or matrix is just ridiculous.

"On this - I guess - months episode of Why DT Is Wrong, ..."
Bruh, this is one of the best intros lol

The amount of times i heard DT say "everybody does X" or "nobody does Y" and i disagreed made me think that dt lives not only in linux bubble, but even smaller Arch/TWM bubble.

Nicely done Brodie, I pointed out in DT's video that most of us also work with other people and have no choice but to put out documents in a format that everyone is using.

Everyone knows that Doom Emacs is evil, because it uses the vim keybindings

Word processors aren't evil. It's only those who force me to use one who are.

Good on ya for clarifying how plain text _actually functions_ in practice.

Huh? DT! Wrong? The hell you say? How could the oracle of all Linux knowledge be wrong? The guru of Gnu? The Master of the Man Page? The wizard of window managers? The Arch Duke of Arch Linux? The self appointed defender of free software?

On the other hand, we could also argue that current WYSIWYG solutions don't focus enough on the content of the document.

Most of my life, I and other people, when we were using a word processor, Word, OpenOffice, LibreOffice; whenever we had to make a title, we always chose to select the title line, make it bigger in font size, maybe make it bold, maybe change the font, the foreground color, and maybe center it or add a tab.
Why this instead of the title option that is available? Because we didn't know.
The most advanced somewhat automatic feature of Office softwares I used are ordered and unordered lists.

It seems to me that the basics of Word processors are _so_ intuitive and flexible that it diminishes your potential for automation and document structuration, to the point where if it is remotely hidden from the main toolbar so that you have to get it with more than 1 or 2 clicks, it's gonna stay in a feature graveyard.

And that makes me think that there *must* be a better GUI solution for a tool to be able to drive its users' incentive to learn more of its features so that they can take it to its full potential.

I am pretty sure DT was using hyperbole to point out that if you are familiar with things like markdown and org mode you can be much more efficient at writing documents

The irony of DT saying word processors are bad because they "distract" you from the main task while he spends all of his time "ricing" his desktop instead of actually learning about computing. And no knowing how to grep a file doesn't make you knowledgable about computing.

I have a simple test to determine usability of an editing standard; can grandma write her cooking recipes in latex/office/libreOffice without too much hassle?

The problem with Japanese is not Unicode, I think text editors should be able to use UTF-8 out of the box. The problem is that Japanese defaulted to use Shift JIS, which may not be installed even if you use Japanese locale in the distro.

Why use word processors when you can use AWK & SED😂
Or EMACS or VIM??

The main problem with word processor is the compatibility. Most of time their files are wrongly interpreted due to incompatible version.

i think the distraction "issue" is more of personal issue rather then a issue with a applications
