What Mini Painting in the 2000's was like - My first ever Miniatures!

Many of you asked me: Hey, how did your first painted miniature look? So I decided to make a video and show you how basic it was and how much I had to learn through my first few years of painting. Hopefully it will encourage a lot of you to keep at it and practice and enjoy the hobby, because eventually we all get better - it took me quite some time too!
The good thing today is, there is so many more resources available than 20 years ago, so you will progress even faster than me ;) I hope you'll enjoy the video!

This video was fun to do - going down memory lane and digging through my storage to find all these OLD minis! Hope you enjoy it!

One thing that kills me is when someone says humble beginnings and three models in looks better than my 300th model

Dude... That's amazing! Honestly, as great as your painting is, I find your sculpting to be more impressive. It's gorgeous, and a part of me is jealous of your breadth of experience.

Trovarion: my 3rd sculpt ever
Me: Are you kidding???

Here is why I like watching your stuff: Reality check. Everytime a tutorial doesn't work or I think I can't do it I watch one of your 'non tutorial' videos. It gets you back to earth, take a break and re-try. 'No contrast, no party' is in my head all the time! Thanks for your effort!

I watched several of your videos for painting techniques and tips. But I had no idea you're such a great sculptor. The minis you've sculpted are amazing.

Very nice Trovarion. One can see that you have a lot of talent, but also that you worked a lot to get to the level you are at right now. Our first mini is not as convincing as Ducan's one, but it shows that you started from far back.

Seeing that Dirz hybrid reminded me that I've seen your work awhile ago in a painting guide by Darkson Designs copyright 2005. Seeing it larger on the screen made me realize how much of the subtle freehand that I missed! Thanks for sharing! I still have all my early painted minis as well!

It's good to see that you are human too. That means everyone of us can achieve a high level with practice. Thanks for share with us. This encourage me to keep painting and improving.

Great video.Always interesting to see peoples journeys. It always surprises me to see how many people have long breaks from painting minis. I don't know why because I also did. Looking forward to part 2.

You seem to have talent, but also a strong desire to improve. Your first 3 miniatures demonstrate that you were willing and able to observe and learn rapidly. Many painters seem unwilling or unable to truly observe and apply lessons. Your first handful of miniatures shoot you past the maximum painting level the majority in the hobby ever achieve.
It's also nuts how much the level of painting skill has increased over the past 20 years. Your first Golden Demon wins are so far from the current golden demon standard.

Been watching a dozen videos of yours, slowly building up confidence to buy some minis and give it a go, then I see this!
😅
That emblem! And that sculpting!
Still, going to try and start, even if it's super intimidating.

Loved seeing your Rackham stuff, and feel like I’ve seen it around the internet before.

Confrontation models are still out there. I even managed to get a Tiger of Dirz. Very lovely concept

Another Mage Knight player! Me and my friends got into Magic, then Mage Knight. Then we got introduced to actual miniature hobby war games with Lord of the Rings back in 2001. It was only a matter of time before we were into 40k (around 2003) and I then dipped my feet into Warhammer Fantasy. So here I am with 3x 40k armies, 2x WHFB armies, a bunch of minis for games I don't play but liked the models, and the start of a WWII collection all these years later.

Eines der besten Tyraniden Farbschemata! Wahrscheinlich einer der Gründe warum ich als Kind angefangen hab.

It's crazy how good you were at sculpting right off the bat. Not bashing any of your painting, but it looks like you immediately had a really good eye for sculpting. I'm sure it wasn't easy though!

this dude improved so fast - you can see massive leaps of improvement from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd

Thank you for sharing this!
I am very impressed with how focused and ambitious you were right from the beginning! I am thirteen minis into the hobby now, and while I'd say I do paint pretty bravely, I have nowhere near your focus.
I already have a feeling that I will end up enjoying making models more than painting them, so I have a feeling that this painting thing is a temporary hobby, but I am having fun.

I loved this video as a reference to the podcast you did with Venturella the other day, about talent, because you clearly have a lot of natural flair for both painting and sculpting, but what I take away is that you are also more focused and diligent and "obsessed" than 95+% of the rest of us.

I have some flair for artsy stuff, but tbh I am a bit of a slacker, so it doesn't get me very far. :)

Cheers!
