"they break a part of water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen" well that's enough internet for today...

They are likely cavitation bubbles... a 90mph tail slap is not capable of severing atomic bonds. If only separating water into elements was that easy...

Thank you for pointing this out. This was just speculated by the researching biologist, but not proven. He thinks it might occur from a localized explosion or shockwave. There is always a possibility of a miscommunication too. It is really cool to get input from everyone and always appreciated!

I’m almost 42 years old, and I’ve never even known this shark exists until this very moment.

Thresher sharks were my favorite animal when I was growing up. Back then, though, they didn't know how they hunted.

God, I feel old.

These are my favorite kinds of sharks! I remember I had a book of sharks when I was little and I always loved threshers. They're very beautiful.

While kayaking off La Jolla California I saw a thresher shark roll out of the water and its long tail slapped down under its body like it was trying to hit something, but not overhead like Simon Oliver’s science article indicates. I do not think a thresher can strike overhead because that would be spine-breaking. I believe a correct interpretation of the article’s video is that as the shark brakes with its pectoral fins, which throws its rear body and tail vertically forward, it  quickly twists sideways and delivers a fast sideways slap followed by a return slap and twist back again to face forward. This slap from the tail mimics the movement of a whip. The thresher only appears to be slapping overhead; really the thresher quickly twists to slap. Oliver states that threshers sometimes slap sideways. I think their long flexible tails must always slap prey in a sideways motion.
