Finding Joy in a Simple Life - the simple things in life make all the difference

I always thought that you have to achieve big things in order to be happy and find joy.

But very early in my twenties I realised that this is some kind of a dream that they sell to you when you're growing up. Our schooling system, the universities, the media, the whole society, they make you believe that you have to climb the career ladder in order to be happy. They all push you to the same direction.

This lifestyle definitely works for a lot of people but it also makes many others miserable.

I’ve met a lot of people who find themselves unhappy already during their time in university and they drop out. They carve a different way for themselves. I’ve also met people who start their career, thinking that this is the right thing for them, and that this is what they should be doing, but then they realise that it doesn’t fulfil them, it doesn’t bring them any joy, and they become bitter and unhappy.

This is especially difficult if you are a creative person. You end up in a position where you don't have the freedom to express your creativity, and it remains unlived. I feel like many of us lose our way when growing up.

You can however find joy in the simple things in life. This is me on a journey to a more simple life.

At home, I would practice minimalism and spend time planting herbs and vegetables. Other things that bring me joy is spending time with pets and spending time in nature.

I realised that those things - the simple things in life - were what made all the difference to me and that's where I find joy.

At the moment I am learning to live slowly and mindfully, taking time for myself, gathering my thoughts and writing them down, having a break from all the running around. It's the small moments in life that matter the most.

I like your posts. I am of your opinion. I gave everything and then lost everything. Now all I'm looking for is rest and peace.

I'm also taking a career break starting June 1st, which I'm quite excited about. I'll be learning new skills so I could take on new responsibilities when I come back. I feel lucky my boss allowed my sabbatical leave. I'll be doing things I never got to do when I had 9-5 job and will be spending more time with nature, for sure. Good luck on your break! You live in a beautiful place :)

You are lucky you found that truth in your early twenties... I learned that in my late thirties! 😂

Hi Marusa, a really courageous decision to quit a job in a competitive city and getting closer to the nature and simplicity. For a living, do you plan on committing some time daily to learn a new skill/education/freelancing or completely devoting yourself to a nature-oriented minimalist lifestyle during your career break?
