Rob Rinder reads a beautiful love letter from one soldier to another

In 1943, two soldiers fell in love whilst stationed in North Africa, and imagined one day returning home together. Sadly, that never happened as only Brian made the journey. He wrote this love letter long after leaving the war, in memory of the first time he heard his lover’s voice.

Rob Rinder read this letter at Letters Live at the Union Chapel in March 2020.

75 million people died in World War II, including about 20 million military personnel and 40 million civilians. This is but one death. We are lucky to have this letter and should never forget the toll this war had on humanity. And the thought that this man lived the rest of his life heartbroken makes this situation that much worse. Such a beautiful letter for such a terrible time.

Regardless of their sexual orientation they were two people in love at one of the worst possible times in history. True love endures no matter the circumstances and that letter expressed the love that endured even after death. Rob Rinder was the perfect person to convey the deep feelings of the love the two shared. 💔😢. 🕊️

What a beautiful delivery of a most heartfelt, earnest loveletter colored with the memories of soaring hearts, shattering loss and deep gratitude for the miracle that is true love. Far from everyone ever gets to experience it, and it is lifechanging. Nobody could gave read this more beautifully. Very moving.

This made tear up. Beautifully written and exquisitely read, the love and heartbreak in these words shines so strongly and it’s wonderful that these two lovers are remembered in this reading so many years afterwards.

Oh wow. Didn’t think I’d tear up but I did. There’s just something about being given a glimpse into their lives together and knowing that it all happened in troubling times, but for them, they were each other’s safe havens. And heartbreaking to know they never got to go home together.

Simply beautiful, beautifully and emotionally read. We take things for granted so much these days, and yet we listen to the story of, what was then, a “forbidden love”. Those two words are the harshest two words ever uttered. Love should never be forbidden, but war…? Well, we can but dream…

The war was crucial depressing but truelove between two soldiers was sincerely respectable.

A Love lost never leaves us, even after losing it the good times were still good. The bad times were still bad, but love felt is still an experience you know you're capable of.
