At the height of Beatlemania, the band and its fan club received thousands of letters each day from adoring fans around the globe.

Louise Brealey, Joely Richardson, Vera Graziadei and Nina Sosanya joined us at Hay Festival in Wales to read just a few of these brilliant letters.

My grandmother gave me a book with such letters in 1971. I was 6 years old. Given it’s bright coloured cover and cartoon illustrations and size I don’t think she realised it wasn’t a children’s book!

I used to think it might be worth something someday, but I recently discovered one of my children scribbled over a number of the illustrations in it back in the 1990s. There’s my pension plan ruined
