But let’s say someone went 120mph for 15 minutes and then 40mph for 45 minutes. You’ll notice that the total distance traveled is 60 miles while the amount of time that’s passed is 60 minutes or 1 hour. Would the average velocity be (120 + 40)/2 mph which equals 80 mph or would the average velocity be 60 mph because you only went 60 miles and it took one hour?
