Young people on social media are showing off their 10-year-old water bottles, pared-down makeup routines and minimal purse collections.

It’s all part of a trend that has taken social media by storm in recent months called “underconsumption core,” where users boast about how they’re continuing to make use of the things they already own and repurpose household items instead of buying new ones, all while saving money along the way.

Anne Gaviola has more on why many people’s financial reality is fuelling this movement to do more with less.

Some of us boomers have been wearing the same clothes for years and thrifting locally for household needs.

I hope this trend is going to stick, the fact that as a society we produce, consume and then throw away so much low quality stuff is shameful

Imagine not spending more than you have! What a concept. These kids need to talk to their grandparents

65% of people have clothes with tags still on them. This cutting back is far more sensible and makes corporations work harder for their sales.

I am familiar with underconsumption (not core). It's called poverty.

Why can’t you use actual vocabulary to describe these trends. These words mean nothing to a regular person who isn’t spending their whole day on TikTok

Nice to see that being broke is a trend now. The spin is awsome lol.

Please... I've been living a minimalistic lifestyle before the internet. I never needed to see some "trendy" videos filmed on iPhones to understand the benefits. These kids pretend to be all about underconsumption now, but they'll fall right back into being regular consumer sheep as soon as their financial situation improves.

Its funny how zoomers talk crap about millennials but so far every trend they come upon is stuff millennials were doing years ago, they just slap a new name on it and think they're clever. This is just minimalism again.

So many hidden gems (clothing) can be found in thrift stores 😊

Of course the media's reporting on this. They find it relevant with their tax funded salaries. Any normal Canadian has never lived that extravagant. That lady wore the same outfit twice and is being praised? Seriously? My nice clothes turn to work clothes which turn to rags as they degrade over time. Clear as day many peoples priorities are not the same.
