I'm retired military and while a junior officer, my department head gave me a little advice about money. It was "paid yourself first". So, before I paid anything for the month, I put a percentage into savings and IRA's. Did that for my military career and later jobs. I make more in retirement than lot's of people earn with their full time job. Great advice.
