Make Your Own Wood Finish - Shellac

This is the third and final installment of the “Make Your Own Wood Finish” series. Today we’ll tackle de-waxed shellac.

The cost difference between making your own shellac and buying let’s say the "Bulls Eye Clear Shellac" you can get at the store can add up over time (you'll save about $6.00 per quart making your own) , but the real advantage to making your own is your ability to determine what pound cut of shellac you wish to use.

The Bulls Eye brand is a 3 pound cut of shellac that you would have to dilute with denatured alcohol to make it a 2 pound cut….which would cost you more $$. I’ve used Bulls Eye Clear Shellac before and it’s a fine product, but in the long run, the store bought variety will cost you more money and it won’t be as versatile as making your own can be.

There is now a playlist on my channel (link below) that includes the 3 finishes in this series and also the 2 part series I did on Iron Acetate. It’s there so that you can easily find it should you wish to refer to something in the future.

Thanks for all that great information, Chris. Shellac often gets forgotten with the multitude of finishes available to woodworkers today. Nice touch is putting all the home made finishes in one play list for everyone.

Great video Chris another use is way before the invention of the product Kilz primer and stain blocker Shellac was used to stop the stain from bleeding thru the paint most. Especially on water stains on drywall i was taught that “ trick” by a old timer construction guy when i began working in the trades he preferred a rattle can spray technique because he told me that he thought it dried the fastest ? One of that guys jobs was. Running the customer service department for a residential construction company that we both worked for in the 1980s

Thanks for this - just about to make my first batch. We're using it to seal in some nasty chemical products that were used on the wood closets in our house, that have been off-gassing.

More people in this woodworking community need to subscribe to this chanel. It may not be a fancy Bates or Giaco style edit, but its good info always. Keep it up Chris!

Also, shellac is good as sanding sealer

Its also part of friction polish for turning

Then its a food additive.

And it's basically lice excrement.
