When the Allied Powers emerged victorious over Nazi Germany, they had a singular goal: to prevent Germany from ever again becoming a military power. Post World War II, at the Potsdam Conference in 1945, they officially divided Germany into four military occupation zones, with the Americans occupying the south, the British occupying the west and north, France occupying the southwest, and the Soviet Union occupying central Germany.
