Yoel and Mari Eat Ethiopian Food for the First Time and WHOA... THAT WAS SPICY!!!

We went to US' largest Ethiopian immigrant community, Washington DC.

The food was INTERESTING to say the least! Watch us to see what we think.

Injera is the bomb. I know it is somewhat sour due to the fermentation but the teff grain it is made from is an ancient, ancient crop. I love Ethiopian food. Hope everyone tries some.

I used to go to an Ethiopian restaurant in Berkeley, California during the ‘70s, and it was always a delicious experience.
We always got the array of meats, stews, and sauces, served on a large plate, that can be easily rotated.
Unlimited spongy bread is utilized instead of utensils.
Ethiopian honey wine pairs well with the food.
The servers wore traditional garb.❤❤

One time I was eating Ethiopian food and an Ethiopian person was laughing at me because my face turned red 😂

I’ve watched hundreds of people reviewing our food. I have never seen one that actually gave a bio about the country and the history. Thank you for doing that. I really appreciate it. ❤ As to the food I would never recommend Doro Wot ( chicken stew with hard-boiled eggs) for a beginner there are many stirfry dishes that are made to order whether you like spicy or not. Definitely give it a try again. ❤️

I was surprised to find out that Cubans don't eat any hot spicy food .

The bread is made from a grain called Teff. It is sour and a bit of an acquired taste. I love it!

You are brave to dip the sauce without taking a little sample first! Good for you, just get all in that dish! I had a coworker in LA who was from Ethiopia and damn, her lunches always smelled so good. She uses scotch bonnet peppers in everything and I didn't dare try her food because she warned me ahead of time. She can eat a scotch bonnet like a pickle and have no effect. I'm so happy to see you both being adventurous and enjoy yourselves while in DC.

One of the best perks of America is all the food from around the world. There is absolutely nowhere else in the world that you can get the global variety of food that you can in America, nowhere.

I moved away from DC two years ago, and I miss Ethiopian food so much I learned to cook it for myself! I have to order the injera online though because I haven't mastered that yet.

The bread is called injera. It gets that sponge like texture because the dough is fermented, and gas bubbles escaping create the texture. It's delicious with Ethiopian dishes though.

All Ethiopian food that I've tried has been delicious. So much flavor. Injera bread is so yummy to sop with, but in its own it can taste quite sour sometimes. I am not vegetarian, but I think those dishes are the best with injera.

Thoroughly enjoyable. You can always ask every restaurant you ever go to, make the food less spicy.
As far as other foods: Persian food is fantastic. What they do with beef, chicken and rice is amazing.

Americans do eat with their hands a lot, though they are not very aware of it. They use hands when eating bagels, tacos, burritos, sandwiches, hamburgers, hotdog, pizza, french fries, etc. And for fine dining, they use their hands most of the time when eating lobster or crab. And yes, eating with your hands make sense, but with clean hands of course!

You guys are so cute together and brave to try something new & very different from what you're used to! My late aunt was married to a lovely man from Addis, so I grew up with and love Ethiopian food - but I can see some of it being challenging for people not used to the spice levels. I'm glad that you found things you enjoyed eating - there are a lot of great Ethiopian recipes, and I hope you have a wonderful time in DC ❤

I was in Ethiopia for 2 weeks back in 2009. I could not get used to the cuisine and couldn’t take that injeera bread either. Loved that you gave it a shot though.

I was hoping to take you to my local Ethiopian place in LA at some point. Everything I order is zero spice. Next time. ❤you two.

Injera is very nutritious and because it is fermented very good for your gut!! Very high in fibre and minerals too.
