Hi there I am typing on behalf of my ESL student. He is originally from China and is now residing in South Africa. It is his birthday this week and he wanted to know more about how birthdays are celebrated in America. This video was very educational for him.

Watching this video in September 2022. I liked your video. Maybe the only difference comparing your birthday parties to ours in Brazil is that in here we clap hands and are loud singing Happy Birthday.

Hi, Hector. I am a brazilian guy who is learning english and I really like to know about traditions, especially when they involve something about food. I love birthday party, and cakes are universal food in birthdays, I guess. In Brazil almost ever we don't have a dinner before the cake. We usually serve small pieces os food we call like "finger food". Coxinha, brigadeiro are some examples oh that. I was thinking when you're getting older your wishes are becoming harder to be true, it isn't easy to blow out the candles if you use one for each year. Thank you for your video.

In Venezuela it's pretty much the same, but we have a local song called "Ay, que noche tan preciosa" that people sing before the "Happy Birthday", in spanish, of course. On your birthday, though, people call you, or text you, or send you a "Happy Birthday" though whatever medium (like FaceBook) but don't visit you, that's usually done on the very next Saturday or Sunday of your birthday. To with someone a Happy Birthday (or to celebrate it) bore the actual day is considered "bad luck".

PD: 28?! Seriously?! I thought you were 20 or 21 as much! O.O
PD2: I've seen it as "copyrighted", not "copywritten".

I can't reply to your Michael Garcia, so I'll post my response here.

People in the US also send texts or post on people's facebook walls. But immediate family and sometimes friends get together for the birthday. It's not unusual to have a birthday party some time before or after the actual birthday if people can't make it on the actual birthday. I've never heard of the bad luck superstition, though.
