2024 Minnesota State Fair New Food Review w/ Jason DeRusha

In today's adventure we head back to the Minnesota State Fair with Jason DeRusha to try the new food items for 2024 including the Sweet Corn Cola Float at Blue Moon Dine-In Theater, the Dill Pickle Tots at Tot Boss, and the much anticipated Deep-Fried Ranch Dressing at LuLu’s Public House. Our review of these items using our new "5-bite" rating system:

1:00 PB Bacon Cakes - 4.5 bites // Delicious and well executed with a good combination of texture and flavor. Easily sharable.
2:36 Deep Fried Ranch - 4 bites // If you're a ranch lover these are a must. I enjoyed them more than Jason. Also a huge fan of the Cry Baby Craigs Hot Honey.
3:43 PB&J Biscuit - 2 bites // Biscuit was great, just not a huge fan of PB&J.
5:29 Patata Frita Focacciawich - 2 bites // Very unique combination of flavors. A bit tough to eat and not easily sharable. I'd get this again but wouldn't want more than a bite or two each time.
6:37 Wrangler Waffle Burger - 4.5 bites // Tasty and snackable. Not too heavy. Will be going back again for this.
8:23 Sweet Heat Bacon Crunch - 4 bites // Delicious and the right amount of spice. The rice does a great job of soaking up the additional sauce and balancing the flavor.
9:34 Koshari - 3.5 bites // Great people and delicious food. Very different than other Fair options. Not exactly a "Fair food" but worth a stop.
10:55 Sweet Corn Cola Float - 4 bites/sips // One of my pleasant surprises of the fair. Not too "corny" which was a concern.
12:00 Blazing Greek Bites - 3 bites // Another food I liked a bit more than Jason. Good flavor and tasty hummus. Which they were a bit crispier so they kept their form when dipping.
13:20 Shroomy Calamari - 1 bite. // I like Mushrooms and Calamari but this was a miss for us. The sauce was good. If these were crispier like true calamari, they'd be at least 3 bites.
14:12 Grilled Purple Sticky Rice - 1 bite // Was excited for this but the char was overpowering and didn't get enough sauce to mask it. The meat was pretty dry too.
15:43 Quesabirria Taquitos - 4 bites // Flawlessly executed and tasty. Will get these again for sure.
16:26 Deep-Fried Halloumi Cheese - 3.5 bites // Great taste and easily sharable. If you like Halloumi give this a try.
17:22 Crab Boil Wings - 3 bites // Great flavor but too much food/ not easy to eat for my preference at the Fair.
18:05 3 Piggy Pals On-A-Stick - 4 bites // Expensive but one of my favorite new dishes of the year. Very tasty.
18:55 Afro Poppers - 2 bites // I don't have anything good or bad to say about these. Maybe I needed more sauce or a different sauce, but the popper itself was pretty bland to me.
19:37 Walking Shepherd's Pie - 2.5 bites // Well executed but I'm personally just not high on Shepherd's Pie in general.
20:22 Turkey Kristo - 5 bites // Almost skipped this but I'm so glad we didn't. Incredible flavor. Went back the next day and got another one + a Maple Cream Nitro Cold Brew (also great).
20:54 Chile Mango Whip - 3.5 bites // Was starting to rain when we got this but refreshing nonetheless. Love the contrast of the sweetness of the dole whip with the spicy of the tajin.
21:27 Dill Pickle Tots - 3.5 bites // Simple but tasty. More Dill than pickle. Like I mentioned in the video I'd recommend getting a sauce to dip them in.
22:14 Ba'bacon Sour Cream + Onion - 4.5 bites // I only got to try one bite of this before it was gone but I wish I had an entire one myself. The Pitas are delicious and the flavor of everything else was top notch.

I live in the subs of the Twin Cities and I like my traditional favorites of Luigi Fries, Garlic toast at the Italian junction, cheese bread at Vescio's, and yes the pronto pup. occasionally a pizza thrown in here and there (sausage/cheese).
Plus you have to wash it down with Mt Dew.
Now outside of the fair find me a good Walleye dinner or Walleye sandwich I am in heaven eating that stuff up

We had an abbreviated state fair trip this year due to the delayed opening on Tuesday, so we only had 1 new item. Paella Depot was a must for my wife and it did not disappoint. Shrimp was a little overcooked, but overall very good.

That turkey cristo had much potential!!!! 😢 But I miss the farmers union blt. The cristo was soooo heavy, my husband and shared a half, (And, that’s only because it was raining, and we were trapped under the farmers union roof.) Had we eaten it all, we wouldn’t have eaten anything else. If you’re going to get something from the farmers union, and I recommend you do, we LOVE the maple cream nitro cold press, and the pork schnitzel sandwich!

This video really needed a recap of the ratings at the end, or pinned in the comments. Very difficult to track your opinion of everything, including how many bites the scale went up to.

The Turkey Kristo was the #1 new food I wanted to try this year, so I’m bummed I never got the chance on opening day.

I did not like the Chile Mango Whip. Without the Chile, it would be a nice 7/10.

The patata frita was absolutely disgusting. Overwhelming garlic flavor? It was so bad. I gave 3 bites and it went straight to the trash. Just awful.
