The whole theme of "family" and Ethan Hunt caring about his team members really started in earnest in MI4. They had that cozy ending in MI4 when they were all sitting around at the clam shack, and Hunt saying how he didn't know how they all found each other, but he's glad they did. And then the entire plot of MI6 was predicated on how Cruise couldn't sacrifice the life of his teammates over the lives of the millions. I can't remember who, but I remember an internet reviewer likened the Mission Impossible series to James Bond, if James Bond cared about people.

It's kind of a bummer that Tom Cruise went fully in-house with his movies, and only does stuff that he produces. Not that I don't enjoy him in everything he does, but I would also like to see him do a Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut or Collateral -type project where he could stretch a bit, out of his comfort zone.
