When I think of the natural progression of Jimmy Hendrix, I have always thought John Frusciante is the guy carrying the torch. Dismissing McCready was a huge mistake. He's without a doubt, the dark horse of this conversation. When it comes to the big 4, boiling down their sound to a singular, generalized influence, paints a picture of what makes them different. Nirvana came out punk, Alice and Chains came out of thrash/metal and Sound Garden came out of Hard Rock and Pearl Jam came out of Funk/ Psychedelic. The biggest contribution to Pearl Jam's sound is McCready. His technique and improvisational jam style would give any Hendrixsque gutarist a run for their money.

I had an up close like this with him in 2009. I still have the yellow guitar pick with his dog on it. About 2 years later I had an interaction with Eddie Vedder. He signed a corona, gave me a pick and also his zippo!

It's nice when you've come up with one of the most beautiful ways to play that chord progression. It's just a launch pad for creativity that you can layer in whatever amount - little or a lot - of technical prowess that you so desire.

Learning this song has been the quintessential pivot point for me as a guitarist.

McCready is awesome. Super great guy as well. And one of my favorite PJ songs. But the entire thing, from the tone to the actual riff, is straight out the Frusciante play book.
