I can't bring myself to watch the 2-hour podcast because they're not even having the same conversation

So this is why Jung and Freud stopped talking 😂

Richard kept trying to frame what Jordan is saying to be myth, and that hes superior (an inference), because he believes in "fact." What he seemingly refuses to concede is that what Jordan is saying is the stories are depictions of factual occurrences, whether or not the actual individual cain or abel actually existed, when they were said to have existed, and how they came to be are virtually irrelevant in this conversation. The fact is, these biblical types appear factually across time, and I believe that is much more important than the mere quandering that this may have been written as non-fiction or fiction!

He’ll resist till death, he won’t choose God now, he’d rather go to hell than lose face at this point. He’s a very proud man.

Dawkins knows a tomato is a fruit.
Peterson knows to not put it in a fruit salad.

Jordan Peterson is so cool. I love him. Awesome teacher.

Dawkins can always be relied upon to demonstrate that "knowledge" does not automatically equate to "wisdom".

"How can you tell they were great writers?"

"....because i can read."

Why would you judge writing based on WHO the writer was? Its either great writing or its not, regardless of who wrote it.

The mere fact that the writing stands the test of time show how great it is

This is going to be almost unwatchable I suspect. Dawkins will never understand (or let himself understand) the distilled wisdom and metaphoric perspective Peterson takes and Peterson will never engage Dawkins on a strictly concrete level.

That question is so bad that I hope it’s merely asked because he’s presupposing (for whatever reason) that Jordan is arguing from authority, and is trying to challenge the error of augments from authority by making a really bad one.

Because of course, it’s a ridiculous question. You know a piece of writing is profound by reading and understanding it. I can know that a chef is skilled by tasting their food. I don’t need to know anything about them.

These stories are equal to, if not greater than Shakespeare.

And that’s coming from an atheist myself. I love Dawkins but he hasn’t really looked at the Bible the way Peterson has.

Jordan’s biblical series really opened up my eyes to the brilliance of these stories.

And I don’t care if they’re true or not. Shakespeare isn’t true either, but it’s still brilliant and it still holds massive amounts of meaning.

They wrote something that has been so famous and powerful and motivating and divisive that it has shaped culture, entire countries, started religions, and offered religious significance for THOUSANDS OF YEARS. Whether you consider it art, a fairy tale, a book, a story, an allegory, the truth, or whatever you consider it, you cannot ignore the fact it has transcended time and humans for multiple millennia. How in the world were they NOT great writers? Socialites practically worship a dude who painted a lady and invented some experimental math and technologies, And because his work has transcended a couple hundred years, it's considered some of the greatest of all time. You're really about to discount something that has shaped even more people, and affected the planet for thousands of years?

An interesting tidbit about the early writings of the Torah that not many people mention is that they are structured very similar to ancient Egyptian legal writings and decrees dated to around the same time. And after 4 centuries in Egypt, the israelites were pretty much culturally Egyptian. So God spoke to those generations of israelites in a tone and style they'd recognise. I.e.the style the Egyptian used.

Even if you think it is fictional Genesis is brilliantly and brutally written with extreme truths

“What makes you think the writers of genesis were a great writer”

They wrote a text that remains well read and known thousands of years after the fact.

"What makes you think they were great writers?"

"The writing..."

Seems to me like Dawkins pays more attention to the writer than the writing.

Sometimes I think Dawkin knows but doesn't want to admit it.
