I don't understand why Southgate refuses to drop Phillips, move Stones to play as a CDM, drop Maguire for Dunk and play him alongside Tomori in central defense.

Goldbridge may well be an expert on club football but it seems he just doesn't get international football. He doesn't understand that the skills you need to be a successful manager at club level are very different from the skills you need at international level. It may well be that Southgate wouldn't be a good club manager, but that doesn't mean he's not a good international manager. There are plenty of proven club managers who've failed at international level, and plenty of successful international managers with little success at clubs. What Southgate has done with the culture surrounding the national team is obviously impressive and effective, and his tournament record is second only to Sir Alf's. And that's having had a mediocre squad at his first tournament, a better but still not great squad at his second tournament, losing the final on pens, and then getting knocked out by the reigning champions and eventual finalists in his third tournament. And in the last year especially, England have played some great football and scored loads of goals. It's bizarre not to give Southgate any credit for this.
