Are Hydrogen Cars Really THAT Bad?

As a channel that makes videos about EVs, we're always being asked to share our thoughts on Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCEV or HEV) and while our research always showed they were a terrible choice, for some crazy reason, some people keep buying them. So for this video, we spent 48 hours living with one, and... spoiler alert, it was awful! While Toyota has done a great job packaging the Mirai inside and out, it's like putting lipstick on a pig. The underlying technology is more expensive, less accessible, and completely misses the performance benchmark set by other EVs.

*We incorrectly claimed the Mirai has a 3 year 60,000-mile powertrain warranty; In reality, it has a 5 year 60,000-mile powertrain warranty*

Inefficient. Think fuel transportation vs power transmission.

When people compare energy density between petrol, hydrogen and a battery lmao

I guess one day I'll be in the situation that I may need to buy a new vehicle that isn't a ICE or hybrid vehicle, due to not being available anymore. And unless something changes about BEV, I would pick hydrogen every time. There are just too many problems with BEVs, and let's be realistic BEVs are not as environmental as we all pretend that they are, those batteries use a lot of fossil fuels to mine and produce. Also in cold climate cities, they loose range, towing they loose range, heating the inside they loose range. Where I live waiting to charge a BEV is just not an option, maybe in summer sure, but winter and most of spring and fall, never, and who would want to knowing how fast you'd loose range at -25ºc. The way I see it, converting gas stations to hydrogen is much cheeper than upgrading the electrical grid and adding all new charging stations, with space to wait and keep warm. I don't know how efficient hydrogen is compared to BEVs and if what I hear about using ammonia will make any difference to hydrogen storage or whether what I'm hearing that Tesla will start making hydrogen vehicles is true. But the way things are right now, only ICE or hybrid vehicles make any sense, unless somethings changes to make BEVs or hydrogen comparable especially in winter.

There are only disadvantages to OTA and apps for your car. Subscriptions monthly for nothing that will propel the car any better. The best they can do is monitor your battery and make sure they keep you from turning it, your garage, and your home into a fireball. Li-ion only does 500 cycles at the cell level. I will wait until batteries improve.

Referring to Donut Media as a source was a good decision!

Blah blah blah 😑 hydrogen is the future mate! I don’t have unlimited time to spend charging a car.
