MAGician = Tap into the MAGnetism... Sorcerer = Taps into the SOURCE (Source-rer)... Wizard taps into life's WISdom... WIZE-Dome... Here you have it folks... Etymology at its best...

This is simple explaination:
Mage: achieve magic by learning using magic equipments. They cast the spell but consumes mana from their body.
Sorcerer: born with magic. Discovered their magic accidentally or unintentionally. That is why we see them younger than other magic users.
Wizards: Don't have magic on their own. They achieve magics by learning the source of magic. That is why we see them old because of years and years of learning to become master. They use magic by casting the magic spells but the magic comes from the spell itself.

So Doctor Strange isn't a sorcerer he's a wizard, since he learned magic through hard studying.

You hit the nail on the head. I've been having a discussion with my GM about the differences between the magic wielding classes. This is a really good explanation of them.

A common thing I've sometimes seen in fantasy stories is that sorcerers are at times seen as being evil.

The way I see it, weather you are a mage, a witch, a wizard, a warlock, or a sorcerer/sorceress, the magical powers you have are not inherently good or evil... it all depends on how you use them.

I feel like sorcerers weave it like an artist, and as the name implies use it in the most raw form.

Wizards use it like a science, trying to find logic in the illogical.

Mage, stands for magic user but also for someone who studied a lot. I would see this as someone just below wizard given that wizard is more of an honorary term. Wizard is often also more mystical and mythical. And mages nowadays almost all use elemental magic (for some reason)

I think most terms are self explanatory actually, I don’t see the confusion.

Down below I’ll write a summary of how most faction writers see the terms.

I'm pretty sure the word mage can be used for anybody that uses magic. Necromancer, wizard, sorcerer, warlock, etc. That's the way I seen it, anyway.

A sorcerer's a wizard without a hat.

I always felt "mage" was just the generalized term with the rest being specialized. Never really realized how complicated this can all be.

I know I'm a bit late😂, but thanks for the clarification. I'm writing a fantasy novel so this was helpful. At least I know now my protagonist is a sorcerer👌🏾

I like sorceress cause they’re a balance of a mage and wizards in element and magic combine. wizards who starts tampering with dark magic can’t be persuasive to let go of all that power. While a mage is a scholar and creator of spells. sorceress are born with natural magic flowing through their body if they don’t control it, it could drive their mind insane to the point of death. So they study and train their mind, body, and soul
Plus I’m Half way a hermit *love the peace and quiet* and love the choice of weapon I’m between a staff, sword, and dagger weapon. I’m a neutral magic user I’m not evil nor good but I’ll do what right to defend the weak who can’t defend themselves

Sorcerer - spawned
Wizards - trained
Warlocks - blessed
Magicians - created

Those are differences?!

I think wizareds are both mage and sorcerer. They born with magic within them, they study, they specialized, they experience, they learned, they apply and manipulate.

Easy:
Mages: Have pockets and pouches.
Wizards: Have hats.
Sorcerors: Don't.
