Clutter & Anxiety

Is your home making you feel anxious?  Do you feel stressed when you look at the clutter all around you?  Well, what I learned from my interview with Dr. John Delony is that when our homes are cluttered, it makes us feel unsafe.  Unsafe in our own home?!  There is more at stake than we thought!

Literally getting your house in order is a part of anxiety recovery. You're taking an action to change something you can instead of being helpless to it. It's where you start your day. Where you start your life.

Wow! That hit home with me. I’m anxious and out-of-sorts most days. No wonder as the house looks like a tornado has gone through it.

A Huge part of healing from anxiety and restoring order in and out of your home and spirit is getting outside with sunshine, fresh air and connecting with the Earth. Not in a hippie way 😂 but taking off your shoes and stepping in the grass and digging your hands in the dirt and breathing deeply in the sunshine. ☀️🌳🌱🌸😎

I’ve really been loving your videos lately Dawn… I’ve finally got some momentum and have been able to let go of some of the fear of just letting stuff go! Thank you so much for always being so encouraging! It is so cool to see you working in the gift God has given you to share with us!

Thatnk you SO much for helping me reprogram my brain and make different choices. I've been massively decluttering the past week and it already feels so much better!!

I visited my late sister one day and she happened to be taking her blood pressure, she offered to take mine, so I consented, it was off the charts so was my heart rate. She asked me why and I looked around her hoarded home and said nothing. Just being there was anxiety inducing.

About 10 days ago i had just finished mopping my floors and went to walk before it got dark. It started raining so i went back home and within about 20 minutes my place was flooding, with water coming in through the cracks in the front door. Because I had chairs and throw rugs, etc. off of the floor, damage was minimal, and because I have room to put everything up, none of my antiques were damaged. I still think i have too much stuff because of this experience, so I'm going through a bit more, so i feel safe!

Tell that to a hoarder though. Their clutter is usually the thing that makes them feel safe. It's very sad.

Yes, too much stuff makes me anxious.
I feel like it making you feel unsafe makes sense. There could be anything behind the boxes.

I mentioned to a family member that I'm decluttering, she told me to not get rid of too much stuff in case i need it...😂😂😂
I'm loving having less stuff to manage, feel bad for her that she has a house full of trash mixed with regular clutter

I could totally see this! Feeling this now with all the new school supplies and no where to put them 🤦🏽‍♀️ . Why do I feel like I always need someone to help me get through this? Uggg .

I always used to say if my car is a mess my mind is a mess. I think the same applies to my house as well. If there’s stuff everywhere my brain is too cluttered!

I would guess the adults feel a little more stress than the kids do as we might feel more responsible to make order out of the various piles of chaos around. Would love to hear his take on that. Thank you, this is inspiring.

Do you know if there is a difference in men and women’s stress response to clutter? My boyfriend barely seems to notice but it bothers me.

It definitely makes me feel unsafe. I like to quote the animated movie Mulan, "that was a deliberate attack on my life!!" But, between ankle injuries and visual impairment, I guess I thought that was just me. When other family members leave stuff out I feel out of control, it's that kind of unsafe, plus the fear of injury.

I agree! This is why I feel unsafe all of the freaking time.

We just had to bring all our things upstairs from our landlords cellar . Since it’s been raining so much his cellar had the biggest flood I’ve seen yet . Been with this landlord for 15 years . I’m so mad and upset . A lot of our things got ruined ! We brought the rest up tonight .it’s going to rain tomorrow and Tuesday again .tomorrow being Sunday . We are surrounded by stiff . It’s not that we gage to much, because I’ve declutter since before the pandemic . It’s almost all our extra stuff . I even have Christmas gifts for kids with cancer ect for this Christmas already boxes . Our winter clothing ect . I’m so stressed already and now this ! I really feel awful . Until I get it all corralled into our walk in closet or our family room where it will live !
