Install Snort 2.9.7 on Windows

This video screen capture shows the process of downloading, installing, configuring, and testing the open-source Snort IDS (v2.9.7.2) program on a Windows 7 computer. The installation process is almost identical on Windows 8/8.1 and there is no difference in the Snort program or rules files for different versions of Windows.

Thanks for the instruction. Using Windows 8, I had to make some very small modifications. But the conf files and paths are somewhat intuitive, so not a major deviation from this guide. This is really fun!

aqil4h Check the syntax of any rules you have written in local.rules. The error you are getting suggests that the string following the "msg:" keyword is missing an opening or closing quote. The message you specify with the msg: option has to be enclosed in quotation marks.
