The HPV vaccine is pretty well known amongst the public, but mostly as a measure against cervical cancer in women. A recent news article highlights its use in men, and we want to highlight that highlight.

I’ve seen some misconceptions in the comments that I’m happy to clear up:

1) The earliest you get vaccinated against HPV, the better the vaccine works. That’s why HPV vaccination should be universal in children –male and female– before the onset of puberty.

2) Still, HPV vaccination is effective and recommended in adults –both male and female– up to 26 year old. So get vaccinated if you can.

3) For adults 27 years and older, HPV vaccination is currently not universally recommended because there is a high likelihood that you already host the HPV strains that cause cancer. HOWEVER its use has been deemed safe up to 45 years of age. So if you are younger than 45 and can get vaccinated, GO FOR IT.

4) It doesn’t matter if you’ve had genital warts. The strains of HPV that cause cancer are different than the one that cause warts. So if you fall between the recommended ages and can afford to get vaccinated, go get vaccinated. You should also consider that the current vaccine used in the US (Gardasil-9) does also covers the strains that cause warts, so it can also reduce their incidence.

5) If you have HIV, *go get vaccinated*! The vaccine is safe in this population and HPV-related cancers are more common in the immunocompromised.

Here in Norway we introduced mandatory HPV vaccination for girls in 7th grade, the program started in 2009. And in 2022 we had 0, _zero_ cases of cervical cancer.
From 2009 - 2017 it was the Gardasil vaccine, and from 2017 it has been the Cervarix vaccine.

I finally got my HPV vaccine routine started just a couple days ago after years of trying to get it (even offering to pay out of pocket) and being denied by doctors. And you’re totally right that the studies/approvals design are the reason for the low rate of vaccination in males - at first I was the wrong sex, then I was too old once they did expand approval to boys.

The HPV vaccine is expensive though. And at least in my country it is only subsidized for women under 16 years old. :(

Why wasn't it suggested for men from the beginning? Isn't herd immunity the goal here too? why would you stop 50% of that population from getting the vaccince? How do Dr.s think the HPV is getting to the cervix?!?

I just got it as a male. It also protects against some HPV strains that cause genital warts so why not take it

I wish I was educated more about the HPV vaccine earlier in my life, mainly to help protect the women I date. I got HPV warts and spread it to someone I was dating, and then another women I was dating later found that she had HPV 16 (a high-risk strain, possibly coming from me) and she got pretty worried and had to do some follow-up testing (colposcopy, etc).

I really don't think that a lot of teenagers watch this show... :)

I got two of the doses of the HPV vaccine when I was 22 and 24. I’m now 29. Is it useful to get the third dose?

I’ve been married (mostly sexually inactive, but monogamously so) since age 24.

okay... THough I got the first one and now I have a serious kidney infection and I am now a diabetic and I also two weeks later even though I am eating well excerising I now i lumps on my thyroid and esophogus and other pain that wont go away. THough I dont get why cant we see on youtube actual reviews from male adults getting the HPV Gardisal 9 shot and the real results?

Have y'all considered doing an episode on the state of transgender medicine? Talking about this vaccine and how it relates to all sexes made me think about how core a sexual dichotomy is to modern medicine and how that means few doctors know how to deal with trans patients, and even those that do don't have good, solid data to base their decisions on.

And How do you keep it from going overboard and causing inflammation in the gi trac, and Suddenly I have a daughter with crohns, and another daughter with possible psorasis.. I don't even know how to spell it yet, , what if my daughter's blood type etc.. or the way their immune system was something like this over did it all...

Waiting on the call-back for three immunizations as I am typing this. HPV happens to be one of them.

I am 28 years old, I believe I had genital warts, now it's gone, I am thinking to take HPV vaccination, can I take that vaccine at the age of 28? And what if I still have genital warts and I take HPV then? Is it safe to take HPV vaccine at the age of 28?
