Can you make a video on how to negotiate a salary. That would be helpful. Also, great video :)

The starting salary for many graduate programmes is almost never negotiable at big firms.

Negotiating salary on your first full-time job is not quite realistic. I've gone to multiple job interviews after college and always tried to negotiate my salary but more often than not, you're hit with the old, "You just don't have enough experience" and companies, more often than not, can always take the next person that's willing to do the job for the salary they offer. In this day and age, it's a lot harder for recent college graduates to negotiate salaries. It is way easier to negotiate a salary once you've gotten more "real life/job experience". Most companies already have the mentality that recent graduates are entitled to higher salary than what they actually deserve. Negotiating salary when one doesn't have enough experience under their belt just reinforces that. That's just my 2cents though.

You don't deserve a raise just for doing your job...what a good point! I fall in to that thinking trap all of the time.

Critical error on my part: thinking I was better than my boss at pretty much everything. This can lead to what my mom calls "thinly disguised contempt." Even if you ARE better at something than your boss? They're the one writing your performance appraisals, not the other way around!

Great video! I would like to add that if you do make mistakes try not to beat yourself up over them. I too regretted how I handled my first salary negotiation but feeling shame every time I think about it is not helpful. You did the best you could with what you knew at the time! Be nice to yourselves.

The boundaries thing is so true. I still do check emails on off times, but I'm very quick to say "okay, I'll handle this in the morning" or "this will be the first thing on my desk on Monday"...I don't do the work when off the clock, but I acknowledge the email so the other party feels like I'm respecting their time.

I am 7 years into my '9 to 5' job, aka my career, and these were all excellent reminders, even if its not your first. Thanks!

Between being a broke actress in my early 20s, "survival" jobbing during periods of unemployment and transitioning to full-time entrepreneurship, I've made it to 29 without ever having had a 9-5, but even so, a lot of these lessons hold true, ESPECIALLY negotiating. ALWAYS negotiating!

My first “9-5” was actually 6:30-2:30 on a management track in food service. I made the terrible mistake of quitting my pain medication cold turkey and not communicating anything to my superiors. (Out of embarrassment of having chronic pain) My work performance and attitude dropped so much that I was taken off my management track and put on part time. Haven’t been able to get a steady job since. When I do, I have to be open about my physical limitations.

Where are these 9-to-5 jobs that people are always talking about? Every job that I've seen has been 8 to 5 or 9 to 6.

This is really going to help me! Thanks so much.

(tip: to make your channel a bit more useful and a bit more polished maybe do a recap of your tips at the end like they do in Crash Course videos.)

Cheers this was actually way more helpful than just "5 (cliche) tips to starting a new job"
Your points were actually more grounded and added insight.

The advice about respecting your own time so that others respect it too is spot on! Also, and this is very counterintuitive, throttle your performance don’t try too hard to impress, remember it’s a marathon and not a sprint. If you sprint during your first days your manager will expect you to sprint always and will evaluate your performance against the best performance you’ve shown.

I wish someone had told me to expect to be treated professionally. I had more than one supervisor in my 20's and early 30's try to set me up with coworkers, which created an awkward experience, as I am female and both of the gentlemen were gay men.

How do you negotiate at your first job with zero experience?

Would you be able to make a more in depth video about Negotiating Starting Salaries? I'm going to be in the same situation, worked as an intern and will be hired full time, later this year, and I'd love more advice on that negotiation process.
