Opinel No8 Garden Knife....a Folding Bushcraft Knife?

Another review of a quality (but often overlooked item of bushcraft gear). The review is not another "straight out the box" opinion of how it is going to perform, but instead, an honest review based on twelve years use in a bushcraft environment.

I never understood the point of spending hundreds on a single knife like some people do when you could buy a tonne of Opinels or Moras instead.

Opinel knives have been made in France Savoie region since 1890 . Everyone from farmers, fishermen, shepherds, scoutboys, armyguys ... got one at some point .
Greetings from France

Never seen someone strike a ferro rod like that, holding the striker (knife in this case) in place and running the rod over it. Makes so much more sense, since it concentrates the sparks where you need them. I'll be using mine like that from now on!

I was bought the Opinel pruning saw as a Father’s Day present by my wife in 2014, . Which is fantastic, I watched this video yesterday and as of today (round my neck on a piece of leather) got a no8 inox as a neck knife from Heinnie Haynes (no affiliation) for £9:95 Brilliant 👍🏻

I have never used an Opinel but have heard good things about them for years. Might have to pick me up one some day.

I have a number 8 carbon that is scalpel sharp always. I use it primarily for food prep/lunch at work. I adore that knife and I agree i love how lightweight they are.

I've had a no8 for over 20 years and its seen better days, I didn't know this knife existed, when I saw the title I thought the garden knife had a hook shaped pruning blade, how wrong I was.
I shall invest!
All the best Neil.

My Opinel is 30 this year, it looks it too but is still going strong. The only folding knife worthy, an edge that can be razor sharp and stay that way too, with it's locking mechanism being by far the safest for ferro rod use.

I really like opinels for food prep, not really thick blade and good cutting performance. Never tried carving with them though, always used them just for food and whittling.
I really appreciate your reviews, please keep them coming 👍🙂

Opinels are pucker knives
I have quite a few of them
I allowed my kids the blunt nose versions to use when they were younger
Nice video
