OH WOW!!! I am so grateful I came across your stunning cover of this BEAUTIFUL song.

My husband died in 2000, when my son was 15. They were both very musical, my husband having played professionally when he was younger.

After his death, my son played Offspring’s “GONE AWAY” until he had it perfected on both drums and electric guitar.

Fast forward nineteen years. My son died from the same genetic cancer that had killed my husband. At his funeral, I had “GONE AWAY” played. Colour me stupid, but the hundreds of times my son played that song, all I knew was that I LOVED that melody. Shortly before his funeral, his closest friend told me that Jamie had learned the song to try to cope with his Dad’s death. I had had absolutely no clue this was the case, because I had no idea that the lyrics spoke of losing a much-loved, special someone.

I have shared your cover with my daughter, who of course lost her Dad and her older brother. Your cover DEEPLY touched the brokenness in my heart, and I know it will for her too.

The octave change between the first and second chorus is a really powerful way to build up the emotions in the song. Dexter Holland did an awesome piano version that I wish had included that, but man, this is the next best thing. Thanks for a great cover!
