In this video, we discuss Slayer guitarist Kerry King's revelation about recording bass on Slayer's albums since the '90s. In an interview with Rolling Stone, King explained that he handled all the rhythm guitars and bass, as Tom Araya didn't contribute to the bass tracks. King elaborated on this decision in a recent Guitar World interview while discussing his new solo release, "From Hell I Rise," which is the first record he hasn't played bass on since the '90s.

Tom was the lead singer. That's enough for any human to deal with. Toms voice is 50% of Slayer records.

So he's taking credit for the years of inaudible bass playing on Slayer albums?

I don't understand why couldn't they send him the demos before the recording sessions. So he could have learnt the songs in time.

Seems logical that when you do not know the song you will struggle in the studio. Be it bass or guitar.

I remember the "Show no mercy" tour it was a club tour and it came to "The Channel" in Boston! They blew the roof off that place!!! Saw them a couple times on "Reign in blood" but the best Slayer show I ever saw was "Clash of the titans" Alice in chains opened then Anthrax came out and did their thing then Megadeath did their thing and then out came the mighty Slayer and for well over 2 hours absolutely destroyed what used to be "Great woods" in Massachusetts, that was the summer of 1991 holy shit am I reallyalmost

For Kerry King, that was actually a very classy response ha ha. He didn't say Tom sucked or couldn't play the songs. Just that they went in the studio without having rehearsed together - which is surprising. So Tom didn't know the songs, had to learn them in the studio.

It makes sense when you consider that Tom was probably more focused on the lyrics than playing in the studio.

React to the 2005 live slayer, the whole show you hear Tom play the bass like it supposed to be in the album

A lot of people seem baffled by this, but it makes a lot of sense. The guitarist tracking bass isn’t really unheard of. Andreas Kisser played all the bass parts on most sepultura albums whilst Paulo plays live. Seeing as Tom usually just writes lyrics, it makes sense for Kerry to track the bass as he’d be more familiar with the instrumentation and it saves time.

You have no idea how many bands do this in the studio. Some bands even hire outside musicians. What you hear on a record and what you see onstage are often two very different things.

And having an attitude like that is why he's doing a solo album only dedicated Slayer fans will buy. The difference is Tom's bass skill and Kerry's bass skill is a smaller gap than Kerry's guitar skill and Jeff Hanneman's guitar skill.

They say theres 3 sides to every story. (1)One person's side, the (2)other person's side & then there's the (3) truth.
Out of those 3 sides, this video seems to have MAYBE (1) ONE of those versions. And it was just a YouTubers narration. I didn't hear Kerry even say what the narrator claimed he said. Doesn't Tom get a say in this? Where's he to speak on his own behalf?

Oh...and, btw, why is your channel remaining "faceless"

Sounds like Kerry King is more interested in drama than making good metal these days. Hanneman wrote the best Slayer riffs anyways.

I'm not saying King was shit... I'm just saying that Hanneman was the riff god.

Hell that's how I became the bass player, and the drummer at different points. Our bass player had an injury, and couldn't play for a while. I knew the songs well enough, and even though I'm not really a bass player I was able to fill in on a basic level. After a while you just pick it up from hearing the same songs over and over. 😂

Much as like Kerry King as a musician just the things he says seems a bit far fetched. I just take it as someone being salty for splitting sooner then they wanted
