This is a SPORTS CAMERA. And that is what I absolutely use it for and nothing else. Its does high speed sports extremely well. Video stuff, I dont even use on this camera. I actually use a different camera for my video needs. Don't forget that this camera is basically a 1 Series Camera in disguise. I don't need a camera to do everything great. I just need one to do one particular specified job really great, and the Canon R3 fits that bill.

I'm a hybrid shooter and can't jive with Sony or Nikon ergos, plus I don't find their AF as fast or reliable. It never overheats, has natural colors, feels so good in hand and, I have a bunch of L glass. So, it's a no brainer. Did I mention being a platinum CPS member with almost concierge service? Can the FX3 take sports or important photos? Can you tell what you are doing in the sunlight with out an EVF? Do you ever use eye-controlled AF? Internal Raw is Clog2, btw. Anyways, you can't go wrong these days with these all these brands, it's just preference, . it's like do you like driving a BMW, Audi or Mercedes.

R6 MKII has not the same Sensor as you R3. Thanks for the Video...

I'm watching the Olympic pole vaulting competition on 8/5/2024 and after a world record was just set by Sweden, it looked an EOS R3 convention as a dozen photogs all holding identical bodies sporting medium range L zooms raced up to the athlete to take photos. If you ever needed evidence of Canon's dominance of the field (and you likely do not), a scene like that is all you would need to see.

I pre-ordered the R3 also and have been using it since it was released. The R3 is the easiest and most versatile camera I have ever used. I will pick up a second one before football starts again in the fall. I have since added an RF 24-105 f/2.8 to my kit. That makes the R3 and this new lens an absolute beast for shooting gym sports. I sorta feel like I am cheating because this combination is so good.

Your click-bait question about it still being relevant in 2024 is interesting. Sure, Canon could do some firmware updates for the R3, but in reality, Canon is going to have a hard time improving on the R3 as a sports machine to convince many shooters to upgrade to a new body. Keep in mind that the cost of LED lighting is falling, allowing more and more facilities to improve their lighting. This, in turn, will diminish the need for better ISO performance in cameras. I shot some photos a few weeks back in a small rural high school gym, for instance, where I was able to shoot basketball with my 1dmk4 and a 70-200 @ f/3.2, 1/1600, ISO 6400. My point is that indoor lighting is improving so fast that it is certainly impacting the sports camera market. The R3 may be about as far as anyone needs to go for indoor sports given my lighting argument

Hmm, yeah, it is true what you say about video, but I do expose to my tools and don't look at the screen for adjusting the image. The screen is also pretty bright compared to some other cameras. The video autofocus is awesome, the battery life is incredible and and switching between set framerates can be setup in C1, C2 and C3. Making it super simple to use. The image, even in 240fps, is amazing! The 1080p is oversampled to the full sensor and looks insane good!. My biggest gripe is the lack of video features, like waveform and anamorphic squeeze factors. But I just love this camera, and even the 1080p still blows my mind after having this camera for 2 years.

I would take issue with your comparison with the R6ii It isn't the same sensor No BSI and not stacked. The processor is far quicker.; in continuous burst the R3 will actually beat the R6ii 40fps due to buffering. please get your facts right

Bought this camera because as a video camera, Sure it's designed for high speed subjects but its video capabilities outclasses even the R5C in many respects. 10x better battery life, Superior ergonomics. It's extremely rugged. Sure it doesn't shoot 8k but 6k 60 RAW internally without over heating sounds like a camera that's well rounded aside from the price of course.

Great video even though it made me think even more about my decision :)
I am thinking of upgrading my R6(v1) to an R3 and I shoot mostly Crossfit and Weightlifting. I don't do to much video, just some reels and hype-clips.
Is it worth spending around trading in my R6 for and R3 and spendning around 45000 usd in between?

The canon r3 has problems with some autofocus cameras, which canon does not officially recognize. This is an analogue of the back and front focus, only the symptoms are slightly different. And so far the problem has not been solved. Moreover, the r3 autofocus has other serious problems with not very contrasting objects.

With the release of the R1 causing the price drops of the R3, would this be a good time to upgraded to an R3 from an R6. I shoot my son’s youth hockey (14u) games with an R6 and a RF70-200 2.8 or RF24-105 2.8. I was planning to skip the R6mkII and wait for the R6mkIII but the R3 looks great. What’s your opinion?

Thanks. I bought it primarily for sports and weddings, but was hoping to get a chance at video. Canon does always seem to cripple the video a bit on their still shot cameras but was hoping this would be good enough. Have enjoyed the few slow motions I've captured but looking at the menus, came to realize I know nothing about video formats and things. I cant afford to add a Sony for video yet so the R3 is it. Can you recommend a source for learning about that? Book? Video series.?

I’m actually picking this up next week brand new at $4k. For my purposes, I think that’s a great deal. Appreciate the review!

Lack of raw burst/pre release seems a major hindrance to get certain kinds of shots.

What lenses would you recommend shooting with this camera? Specifically for wedding/portrait shooting?

Does the EOS R3 enable touch-auto focus (on it's flip -out LCD screen) even if you have an external monitor connected to the unit during video recording? Thanks.

Great video. Need advice, im looking t o purchase either the R5 or the R3. I do a lot of landscape and portrait photography and the occassional airshow. What camera would you recommend? I am currently using the discontinued 7D and it still works like a charm. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
