Former US Ambassador to NATO Ivo Daalder weighs in on Biden’s European trip.

A look at US President Joe Biden’s first trip abroad, which included a very important first stop at the G7 summit in the United Kingdom. Did he convince allies that “America is back” and ready to resume its leadership role in global affairs? And if so, does it even matter if Americans still need to be convinced that US engagement in the world is vital? In this episode of GZERO World with Ian Bremmer, former US Ambassador to NATO Ivo Daalder weighs in on Biden’s performance and the way forward for the US and its closest friends.

Why has Cyril Ramaphosa, the SA president, been cut out of that main picture?

9:00 That's a really great point. Forget about the G7 completely. Take the members and bring together the other advanced democracies: Australia, India, South Korea, Taiwan, even Indonesia.

Just like the G7 excludes authoritarian nations like Russia, China and Saudi Arabia, this new meeting would too.

That's what values-based foreign policy is all about.

On the issue of whether the US can be said to be "back" in the context of the G7, isn't one question the extent to which Western Europe (not including the UK) is relevant to US security? NATO is/was a project to prevent a Soviet invasion of Western Europe, and Russia does not represent a comparable threat. Moreover, the Cold War was a successful strategy to avoid a hot/nuclear war with the Soviet Union, and comparable circumstances simply don't exist in today's world. China is not in a position to present a threat comparable to what was presented by the Soviet Union, and any actual military confrontation with China would almost certainly be a naval confrontation to which Western Europe (not including the UK) would be irrelevant.
