For the past 14 years I have thought this was called "laughing plaster". Wow I must have misheard.

For the "just use drywall" folks or "you need to use this type of plaster/compound/mud":
1. Yes a drywall patch works but isn't necessarily more efficient, particularly with smaller patches, or feasible. You still have to tape, do more than 1 coat and sand. A drywall patch is best for larger fixes. Second, a drywall patch may not match thickness to the existing plaster-you would have to build up layers. Or a drywall patch may be too smooth and obvious aesthetically.
2. If you use plaster/mud, you have to do multiple layers to build up depth. For the base you don't have use structolite, durabond or any specialty gypsum plaster mix. But you should use a hot mud because it sets fast and will set thick. For 2nd and 3rd layers best to use an easy sand hot mix. You can also use an all purpose pre-mix for the last or top coat. Just don't use durabond or stuctolite or you'll be sanding for days.
3. For the plaster purists, technically none of the modern gypsum based "plaster" products are a correct match either. The original plaster was made from a lime-based plaster or mortar so if you want to really match the original, you'd have to use a true lime plaster which is not readily available at hardware stores in the US.
4. Lastly, whatever technique or materials you use also depends on what the client or customer wants or is willing to pay for. One size does not fit all.

You can also just add a 1/4” peace of drywall with screws cut your time in half because time is money

Hey brother, plaster is plaster. NOT drywall compound. Closest thing is called durabond 90 Brown bag. But plaster is still available at most drywall supply. Not home Depot. Plaster topcoating is making a comeback. Hard as rock. Might bring skill back to the trade. Speaking from experience.

In the 1980’s my dad repaired some lathe/plaster work in our old house. It was the old horse hair fiber plaster. So it was summer and our dog needed to be shaved anyway. 😂
40+ years later his repair job is still holding up well with course mutt hair embedded in it.

I have this exact same issue. Similar size like you did there. Can you please share the list of plaster product and materials used? I can’t afford to mess this up. Thank you 🙏🏾

One to two scoops gaging plaster and some structo lite. Top it with a finish coat of actual plaster. Durable and will last a long time.

Okay so this is a great demonstration here. The easy sand compound is always my go to when repairing plaster. Get that money.

"Compound" should not be used for this repair process. Using it like the video shows explains your frustration.

I would recommend some gypsolite plaster next time for filling in where the slats are.slick it out as it sets oh ya put a handful of gypsum’s in plaster prior to mixing this will help it set up. The mesh it solid the solid coat of hot mess the subsequent coats of finish mud. You can also ad a bonding agent to Plaster to help with adhesion

Are you doing the repair with joint compound or plaster?

If you not doing real plaster the just throw up a sheet for 1/4" or 3/8" rock and save your self a lot of dry time
