Why North and South Sometimes Swap

You might know that the churning metal soup inside Earth’s outer core generates electrical currents, which in turn creates the magnetic field around the Earth - which is the reason you’re not getting fried by cosmic radiation right now.

But what you might not know (ok, I didn't know until recently), is that every so often, that magnetic field actually REVERSES. The North and South Pole sometimes SWAP PLACES. But the coolest part is how we know that...

Some scientists are trying to figure out how to predict the movement of the magnetic field, but thankfully, it protects us on the surface either way!

We made a longer episode about the deep earth and you won’t believe what we find...

the flip would still have us protected, but every compass and thing that relies on the magnetic field would be messed up

When you tell your buddy earth to do a flip and this is what he does

Someone could really mess up scientists by rotating all the rocks 90° clockwise.

We can not only read it from the oceans floor but from ancient ceramics as well. The minerals orient themselves along the magnetic field during firing and stay like that after they cooled down

There's a lot of Physics and paleontology involved in this discovery and it's amazing

A nice thing to mention is that the process of a magnetic pole reversal takes thousands of years (possibly 100, 000+), and signs like the weakening magnetic field, rapid pole shifts, and the South Atlantic Anomaly suggest we might already be in the early stages.👀

Churning Metal Soup sounds like an excellent band name.

We're likely in the middle of a reversal right now! In the last 100-120 years, the south and north poles have moved approximately 750 miles from where they were previously observed.

The south pole is progressing upwards from Antarctica toward Australia, while the north has migrated upwards from Canada into the Arctic Ocean and approaching Russia.

The fact this electromagnetic shield is fully natural it's just absolutely insane

So many questions!!!!
1. Is the flip instantaneous or gradual?
2. And if gradual, how long?
3. Would that cause chaos or even extinction of species who use the magnetic fields for navigation?
4. What would it do to our technology like compass's or GPS?
5. Would it have a significant affect on agriculture?

My question is, once it flips, will this effect me in any way?

Good video. You speak very clearly and at a good pace, to the point that I only just realized that your videos were in English, which is my second language.

This one’s not so optimistic!
But beyond auroras in the Ecuator and some fried electronics here and there, it should keep protecting us for many million years more

Figuring out how to recreate this will be very useful for mars.

Love ur enthusiasm Cleo.. makes it worth watching... Although the actual knowledge itself doesn't make a difference in our mundane lives..

Never thought of it as metal soup before

This actually happens all the time *kinda. The magnetic poles change location all the time and the speed they move is also changing so right now the poles are accelerating and are moving several miles a year🎉😮🎉

i learned about magneto stratigraphy in my 1st semester in college and my mind was blown. easily one of the coolest beginner learning fields in geology

The shift was thought in schools however we weren't told how we know it happens.
What I love about this channel is that even when you know about the subject of the video you still learn new things

Kinda curious. If the magnetic field swapped, would it weaken and radiation make it past enough to be harmful to life or no?
