Homan's sign is used widely to monitor patients with risk for deep vein thrombosis
It is a sign that may not be very specific but yet very useful clinically to determine DVT.

Deep vein thrombosis is a condition in which the deeper veins of our body forms clots. Though this clots may seem harmless they do have a tendency to break loose and migrate to other parts of the body where they may create a blockage which can be quiet fatal if it gets to the lungs or heart.

Homans sign is used for monitoring patients who had a surgery or trauma or other risks for DVT.

To elicit homan's sign you need to place the patient in supine or sitting position and extend the knees. Once extended, move the patient's feet in dorsiflexion and squeeze their calf muscle. If patient complains of pain, it usually is a positive Homan's sign indicating further evaluation.
