I’m 6’5 and I’ve always done sumo. This year I’m going traditional. I’ve dialed the weight back and got after it already👍🏻

Only one problem only certain people with the right body proportions can even lift in sumo. Also sumo has no advantage over conventional. Conventional allows you to pull more weight off the floor but when you get about knee height that's when the struggle starts. For sumo it is harder to get the bar off the floor but when it is off the floor the rest is easy. I have competed in powerlifting for 13 years and was trained by a world class heavy weight champion that beat Mark Henry at the Arnold classic. He is also a registered official in the USAPL and the reason why sumo is allowed and will always be allowed in powerlifting is because sumo doesn't give a lifter a greater advantage over someone who lifts conventional. I can lift in both and can tell you the difficulty strength wise is the same. Technical wise sumo is way more difficult.

And it shows you are not gay when you do it conventional. Pretty important point I am surprised you didn’t mention that.

I find the sumo dl feels weird. My squats hit the adductors anyway so I don't feel like I'd need it as an accessory but for me the conversation of what's easier is moot because sumo doesn't work for me. I'm built for conventional, so it can't exactly say something is easier when I can't do it well. I would assume conventional feels as weird for some people as sumo does for me, and I find that completely acceptable

The difference is very minor and I think the wold record for sumo is lower than conventional

Is that super wide sumo stance at the beginning legal for powerlifting?

Dunno.. Championed use it because it allows then too qualify their lift vs doing it knees near together.. More distance... Might not be able to lift ever save weight

Sumo is for three types of people:

1. Competitive powerlifters who want a higher total.

2. Young guys who are relatively new to lifting and wants to lift more "impressive" numbers more quickly due to a shorter ROM lift with better mechanics

3. Guys who have piss poor leverages and can't do regular deadlifts and thus face the tragic choice of not pulling from the floor at all, or having to utilize an alternative lifestyle lift .

Sumo builds ton of muscle and size as well. Just depends on your flexibility

Kinda sounds like a Mark Rippitoe starting strength program less informed

And if you can't get into conventional without rounding your back? I know there's an alternative for muscle building purposes, but I'm curious to see if you have actual answer (no shade intended).
