Oil painting basics for beginners blue sky

In this video I give some simple easy tips for painting the sky. The sky is often over looked by many beginner painters but there are many ways you can make it stronger and more interesting.

Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

The challenge seems to be how to keep the area just above the horizon from turning green (since you are adding yellow to the blue). I still haven't figured that out.

Interesting- I’ve usually heard ultramarine described as a warm blue and pthalo green-shade as a cool.

Hi Chris. Thank you for another very informative tutorial. Am I right in thinking that you consider ultramarine blue to be a cool blue and phthalo a slightly warmer blue? It seems that some artists see it as a warm blue and phthalo as a cooler blue. Does the difference in opinion really matter much?

Oils are definitely best for skies and clouds! (Over acrylics, IMHO).
