RMS Olympic ship whistle

Like sub and hit that bell
This was when RMS Olympic had hit the Nantucket lightship in 1934. (1 year before she was sent to the scrap yard) To anyone wondering what was the ship escorting her, I actually have no idea. (If someone could quote me on that thank you)

This whistle, including all the bells, was FOUR FEET TALL

No wonder they were so loud

Olympic should have been preserved as a museum ship for her entire class of ships. The voice of Titanic and Brittanic was probably very similar to the one we just heard

Imagine hearing this just before it sinks your U-boat.

Just imagine being in New York in the 30's, hearing this and just seeing an absolutely massive ship in the harbor, the likes of which have started to be more and more common, but there's still something special about it-it held the title of largest ship in the world for a time.

I am sooo glad this motion picture had been captured and survived untill today when we can appreciate it. Wish I could be there and see the Olympic by my own eyes...

From a human point of view, Olympic was scarred for life, she watched her two sisters Sink spectacularly, Titanic's sinking changing the way of life for liners. She stood to the end, always strong,
Always reliable.

on a side note,

These ships were made to be POWERFUL man, you could hear them from the other side of New York. i love the Olympic class so much.

George Bailey in “It’s a Wonderful Life” says to his uncle:
“You know what the three most exciting sounds in the world are? Anchor chains, plane motors, and train whistles.”
To that I would most definitely add the whistle of the RMS Olympic.

RIP Olympic

Born in 1911
Scrapped in 1935

"After being serviced for about 25 year they called her the *old reliable* "

such a pity that the ship wasn't preserved. Although - looking at Queen Mary now, perhaps it's for the better. A legend forever, memory never tarnished.

older fascinating, yet so often overlooked sister of Titanic (and Britannic). Unlike her infamous sister Titanic, Olympic indeed became that reliable unsinkable one. I love Olympic, she deserved better end

I’m surprised there’s like no comments from people going “DONT YOU MEAN TITANIC CAUSE THEY SWITCH!!!!” Because let’s be honest anytime someone brings it up we all just sorta mentally tune them out

also, i can see myself sitting in a submarine, looking out from the top hatch with binocs, hearing this and suddenly just turning around and getting rammed.

Definitely one of the greatest ships.

It's unfortunate that the UK scrapped or destroyed a substantial part of their history between 1930s and the early seventies

Also....Anyone else notice that that tug is actually huge for a tug. It has to be 252 300-plus feet long
