The spell was so insane the very GODS had to release a balance patch lmao

Well I mean it’s also the ONLY 12th level spell in the entire system, and to cast it involves a year-long ritual that requires several million gold pieces worth of materials including but not limited to the still-beating heart of a kraken and thousands of gallons of freshly harvested Terrasque blood, it is basically impossible for anyone other than an NPC to even attempt to cast.

For anyone wondering, the Caster possessed Mystra, the original god of magic, and realised She was responsible for repairing the weave, but when she realised she was being controlled and wouldn't be able to do her job, she passed her domain onto a lesser diety and killed herself, causing cataclysmic damage to the weave, but ultimately saving it as the new Magic Diety, Mystril, having seen the chaos, restricted the mortals ability to use magic, making the weave easier to maintain.
The caster died as a result of Mystra's death, and due to the weave getting decimated, all floating cities of the netherese empire fell from the sky, killing nearly all of them, toppling there governments and scattering their people. Which is where they went.

This was the only 12th level spell that was ever cast by any mortal, and in the age of magic 10th-11th level spells that raised mountains into the sky. I do find this topic very fascinating and love that you made a short on it.

Step 1: be a high level wizard
Step 2: bring the DM’s favorite snacks.
Step 3: use wish to cast it

Uh-huh, so the spell that canonically limited all future spellcasters

In a similar vein, there was a spell called "The Last Word". When Orcus was deposed from his layer in the abyss his quasi mortal incarnation went to find the spell. Upon retrieval of the magics he used it to kill several gods, including the drow goddess who stole his realm from him.

DMs using Liches for their BBEG: “Write that down, write that down!”

The effects of the spell probably would have been "fine" if he didn't try to become the god of magic
Might have still killed him and the target but all magic stopping for a bit wouldn't have happened

Karsus' Folly is literally a message from Wizards of the Coast to Wizards at the table... you're insanely powerful. Don't go overboard, or you'll wreck the game and get nerfed hard.

I mean, it is kind of deceptive to say it was banned. The spell only exists to help tell the story of the one responsible for the god of magic dying that one time, and why the current god of magic capped spell levels at 9.

Karsuse's Avatar has been a lore component to how they explain the magic system only going to 9th level since 3rd edition.

I recently had an idea about this spell and I want to know what y'all think of it.
I was thinking about putting a spell scroll for Karsus's Avatar in my next campaign and having it be the main goal of the BBEG to obtain it. In order to prevent the BBEG from getting it, the players will eventually end up having to sacrifice it.
After all, there are two ways such a spell scroll could exist:
- If it was made by Karsus
- If someone accidentally made it in an attempt to make a spell scroll for a different spell

theoretically you could use a wish or wishes to make it castable and give yourself all the components to cast it

short: it's a banned mechanic

Wizards using the spell wish: 🗿🗿

Gonna bookmark this spell for a campaign I'm creating.

I mean. That spell is more of a worldbuilding event than an actual mechanic in the game
