Friday marked one year since the detention of Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reporter Evan Gershkovich in Russia, who was arrested on suspicion of espionage while on a reporting trip in the city of Yekaterinburg.

Gershkovich, 32, became the first U.S. journalist arrested on spying charges in Russia since the Cold War when he was detained by the Federal Security Service (FSB) on March 29. The reporter, the Journal and the U.S. government all deny he is a spy, while a Russian court extended his pre-trial detention by three months earlier this week.

On Wednesday, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said that “Journalism is not a crime” and promised that the Biden administration will continue working to secure his release. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that “absolute silence” was needed when it came to discussions about possible prisoner exchanges involving Gershkovich.

To pay homage to Gershkovich’s one-year detention mark, the WSJ — one of America’s largest newspapers — published a blank front page on Friday, with the headline reading: “His story should be here.”

He doesn't look like he's under extreme circumstances. He should have known the risks of getting caught. Look what happened to the guy that did time in North Korea. He died and that Julian guy? Where is underhouse arrest again?

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul appeared to leave the wake of slain New York City Police Officer Jonathan Diller just minutes after arriving at the funeral home on Friday afternoon, video showed.

Video showed the governor speaking with a man outside the Massapequa Funeral Home on Long Island, then turning around and heading out. Clapping could be heard as she left.

The incident came a day after the NYPD's Sergeants Benevolent Association President Vincent Vallelong said in a letter to union members, "I’m sure that many elected officials will attend PO Diller’s funeral, shed a few crocodile tears, and prominently seat themselves for a good photo opportunity. The sad reality is we don’t want them there."

President Putin, please release this innocent man. Please 🙏 you have already taken a year out of his life. I would wish the same for you if you were in another country detained.

Taiwan 🇹🇼 as a country has:
- freedom of press,
- free elections,
- a good economy, and
- good relations with Western countries.
Russia 🇷🇺 and China 🇨🇳 have none of those things.
