Advanced RTAWD Differential Designs

On Sunday, Jeremiah Porter and Jeneen Dunn worked on finalizing the design of the RTAWD retrofit coupler. The design incorporates a combination of technologies related to internal viscous couplers, hydro-mechanical operations, fluid dynamics, thermal dynamics, heat transfer, and more, all in one unit. It is designed to cater to both on and off-road AWD users. The design uses the internal pump as a bearing surface, with the base cap providing stabilization. The oil traveling in the fin of the viscous fluid also acts as a fluid stabilizer, reducing vibration using fluid weight. At the base of the viscous coupler is a flat roller bearing with two shims, which will also act as a stabilization surface to help balance and stabilize the spin of the coupler. This results in a triple-bearing, fluid-stabilized, self-lubricating, and oil-cooled Viscous Coupler with an internally oil-cooled, pressure-regulated design, similar to those used in helicopters. Each section of the pump is copper gasket-sealed using copper gasket material with O-rings to maximize pressure through the pump. The pressure-filled, gravity-drained design uses 49 wagon plates internally for a mid to light-duty damper when using 30k to 50k, and mid to heavy duty when using 60k or above. The oil cooling design aims to prolong its effectiveness, increasing performance, coupler life, and internal cooling in the whole differential.
