I’m 56, a beginner rider. Each session of groundwork, I learn something new. But I’m a softie. I speak softly to my horse that I train with. I look for affection and I’m starting to get it. But I know I have to be cautious because she knows she’s stronger than me.

From someone who grew up with an - I was taught to MAKE the horse do. Pressure was always on. It has been very hard to retrain my hands and muscle memory to be soft. Being a soft handler takes just as much practice as it does to be a soft horse!
Jimmy is a beauty! Love the tips Matt - fundamentals are much needed for all horsemen.

Love ground work. I'm a firm believer in moving my horses forward, backwards, left and right during my ground work session. Makes for a nice and respectful horse. :)

This is going to help my mare so much! She’s “broke “ to ride but is just really all over the place and like a fresh 2yo at 19! We are reworking her slowly

Hi again MATT
Good to see you.
No better said then to pay attention to the small things. Taking care of those little things on the ground can make a big difference and less hassle when riding. Really good tips can be used at
any time.
Thx as always for sharing. Good to know you're surviving the heat!

My horse is recovering from laminitis and have been told to hand exercise him. This will give me something to do for the next month or 2.

Matt, I like your style, but the guy that you are working with, I hope that, off camera, you gave him some tips on being a little softer.
Just seeing your videos for the first time. Looking forward to finding more videos of yours

im sorry but i see a lot of confusing signals to this horse. hes wanting to find the right answer but doesnt know what is being asked. Lots of good things happening here but there are certain parts where the question wasn't so black and white.

Hello <Matt. I am a life long horse women and am currently teaching my daughter the ropes on how to do the same. We have an 11 year old arab who is a very intelligent and loving horse; however, she came with NO training. Training I can provide but, I worry since her chest muscle groups are larger on one side d/t past poor conditioning and just getting too strong on the one side, that I need to strengthen her through ground work first before I start her training. She is VERY stubborn though on following with the lead. She contests every time. She knows the lunging crop and can obey this and I have worked with her softening up. But when you want her to go, she refuses. Suggestions? ALSO, could you please suggest a video or two of yours to get some very good ground work exercises I can do to get her ready for the spring ride and training? I would love to get an actual conversation going with you on this

What does it mean when a horse licks its lips?

Hey Matt. That was great. I have a horse that sometimes bucks under saddle when I running fast on a third Barrel home I have been lunging him at the Lope before getting on. And trying to make him buck on the ground and then reprimanding him by saying hey in a Gruff voice when he does buck. And then getting on when he has no bucks left to give. In your opinion am I doing the right thing that's good for my horse?
