Osho is Talking rubbish...
Buddha did not ask anyone to desire enlightenment... He just teach us and guide us to liberate ourselves to achieve enlightenment... and be natural in ourselves during this path, & not to desire it, but let it be naturally...
Osho doesn't truly understand what Buddha had taught us...

The core of Buddhist practice is
From a scientific view point, we all starts with mundane consciousness. Unable to control and at the mercy of our karma. We all strive like the Buddha to attain a Supramundane consciousness free of karmic retribution and at that stage we attain wisdom ( fully enlightened) . To eradicate all defilement and attain all four stages of enlightenment is to practice the Noble Eightfold path.

This is all philosophical crap. The beings who attained liberation desired it intensely and worked hard for it. At some point they gave up the search and liberation followed.
There are many Zen stories of sudden awakening. As an example the awakening of the Zen nun Chiyono. She was carrying a pail of water from the well on a full moon night and was looking at the reflection of the full moon upon the surface of the pail of water. Suddenly the pale broke and with the disappearance of the water and the moons reflection Chiyono's identification with being a person named Chiyono also disappeared and awakening happened. What the story doesn't inform us of is that as a beautiful woman she scarred her face so that men would not chase her and that she had been practicing zazen for 20 years.
Buddha abandoned his palace, his wife and newborn child and almost starved himself to death. After 6 years of total effort he gave up and as he utterly let go of all desire for anything at all he watched the morning star fade and as the star faded his identification with being a great spiritual seeker and renunciate named Gautam Siddhartha also faded and awakening happened.
You cannot give up and let go untill you have tried your utmost and failed.

I studied Buddhism since a child.. I'm disagreeing with most of those you telling that Osho said.. It is not easy to attain nirvana outside a Buddhist culture. Being a Buddhist is the best thing you should do to attain nirvana. Because those cultures are made focus on Nirvana & its path.

He( before got enlightened) was searching for way to never reincarnate on earth . The push factors that cause him to search was the old age, death and disease he witnessed outside his palace . Since that moments, he was disturbed and determined to find the way out from those miseries( old age, disease and death). He nearly died of prolong fast before he got enlightened saved by a cow girl that advised him to be moderate in his pursue . She fed him with rice milk as he was so malnourished from his prolong fast . He subsequently followed the cowgirl advice and he achieved his goal .

Well, the lead in "Don't be a Buddhist" is a wrong view.
I ronically, what Osho natative reflects almost exactly what the ibjective of Buddhism teaches.
And like any tool, once it has served its purpose, it can be put aside or let go of, releasing the attachment of a need to do and just "be" without the burden of concern for the sel, ergo selflessness.

Budha newer sad it is a religion. Budha said I can only help you, but one will have to do it by itself. As we see in Ananda`s realization. Pursuing the truth is like the dog chasing his own words. What is interesting is that most Buddhists do not understand the realization because they rely on Budha. Many misunderstand if you, see Budha on your way, "Kill him".Brahman should touch Nirvana alone. And realize partisanship, and obtain Buddhahood. One who seeks Budha outside, from his mind is nothing but a fool. The Abydharma is great as you have nothing to lean on, nothing to be obtained. As in past lives, to obtain realization had to let go, take a break, and some pain. And it happened. Compassion is the highest form of love, mentioned in all religions, or sects, which means one has to work on himself, but to be aware and councouss. Enlightening activity is to help others in any way but to know how for oneself, what is truly good for others. See Karma is Action. To be a creator of destiny rather than to believe in one. To help the other, to cross the bridge... Thank you

This is far from esoteric. When one plays basketball, one forgets the goal of winning while doing everything in each moment to win the game. Here, as in everything else, the journey and the destination are one and the same. Sometimes we are not at our best, either in basketball, or at various stages along the journey, and sometimes the obstacles to winning are more than we can bear, but in the scheme of things, whose measuring, or comparing, just get off the couch and on to the zafu and play the game!

Osho advises that you don't listen to others and find your own way to know reality or truth. If that is the case, then there would be no need for him to have any followers. In spite of this, he maintained tens of thousands of followers. As a result, he contradicted himself. This renders him as a complete idiot.

Millions and million and millions of devotees and virtually no enlightenment happening.
