Welcome to the USCCA's Gun Vault. Today, Kevin will be reviewing the Ruger P89 DC, an upgraded version of the original P85, a double action pistol designed specifically for the US Army. While Ruger did not win the military contract, various P-Series pistols were picked up by the San Diego Police Department, the Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Turkish army.

The P89 DC is a stout gun - big, heavy, and overbuilt. Its size does make for a comfortable shooting experience, despite it weighing in at 32 oz empty and 40 oz with 15 rounds.

If you don't mind the size and weight, the P89 has a lot of cool features for home defense and concealed carry. Its decocking mechanism is similar to the Beretta G-Series - you don't need a manual safety because its spring-loaded lever decocks and immediately returns to firing position. This is perhaps the gun's great advantage.

It also is versatile, featuring ambidextrous controls for both right and left-handed shooters. Additionally, its takedown is simple and easy. Since it was built for military use, there are no loose parts to lose, making the cleaning process a piece of cake.

Ruger stopped manufacture in 2013, but you can still easily find these guns on the secondary markets for around $350. There are tons of accessories (including holsters and magazines) available for this model as well.

This gun works forever, and at the price, it's a great investment for anyone who doesn't mind the hefty feel of the gun.

I have a P89 and P90 (produced in 1996), and a P95 with a rail. All amazing guns! Best guns Ruger ever built.

Today I did a head to head comparison shooting my P89 against the Beretta that won the competition. The P89 was far more accurate and consistent for me with 100 rounds through each. Both great pistols but the Ruger looks and performs more like a military weapon and shoots better. Were I in the service I would prefer a Ruger P89 by a long shot.
