This Pottery Barn video tells you about types of cordless Roman shades and gives tips to install shades with ease. Cordless shades can be mounted outside or inside your window frame. Inside mounted shades give a finished, built-in look, without covering the window molding and also make a good choice for layered window treatment. To install shades that are mounted on the inside, measure the window's diagonal length in both directions to make sure your windows are square. If your frame isn't deep enough or if the measurements differ by over half an inch, you can opt for outside mounts instead.

Mounted on your wall or molding, outside mounted shades make your window appear larger. You'll require at least two inches of flat surface on the window frame or above the window for mounting brackets. Measure the area you want to cover with a tape measure; also include any overlaps on the surrounding wall.

To install shades that are mounted on the inside, begin by measuring the length of the headrail and use this measurement to make two end-of-headrail marks centered along the top of the window frame. Hold C-shaped brackets in a straight position against the top of the frame.

Mark out the frame through the two openings at the top of the bracket. Drill pilot holes at the marked locations to prevent wood from splitting. Drill a one-inch deep hole at each mark using a power drill and a 1/8th inch drill bit. Secure the brackets using the two provided long screws.

To mount the headrail on the brackets, align the headrail with the mounted brackets and push it into the bracket's open end. Secure the headrail using the provided short screw.

Follow the same steps to install shades that are mounted on the outside, only changing the position of the brackets. Operating these cordless shades is easy as all you need to do is pull the shade down to the desired location and it automatically locks into place. To lift the shade, pull it down a short distance first. It will unlock and retract upwards.

My shade does not lock in desired location when pulled down. Shade is less than two years old and pulled down maybe 10 times total. Riviera stripe.
