Russian and Chinese warships been conducting drills around Japan since Friday. The Chinese & Russian warships held a live-fire anti-aircraft drill in the Sea of Japan. At the end of World War II, the Soviet Union invaded the Kuril Islands, some of which imperial Russia had previously controlled. While the transfer of the islands to the Soviet Union was included in the Yalta agreements, Japan continued to claim historical rights to the southernmost islands.
